Hi Kendra - Thanks for your post - it's a difficult topic. I don't know the figures for how often children are bullied by their families, but I know that it does happen, and perhaps frequently. One of the best things we can do to help children (even those who are not being bullied by their families) is educate the family about stuttering and about bullying. In our own work, we have developed a book for SLPs that educates SLPs about bullying, as well as a companion workbook designed specifically for parents to help parents understand and work through their own concerns about stuttering. Education is the key to success, though it can be hard for SLPs do accomplish if they do not have access to the families. therefore, we also recommend that families get involved with support and self-help organizations such as the National Stuttering Association (NSA) and Friends: The National Association for Young People Who Stutter. The more the parents can come to terms with their own fears, the easier it is for them to be supportive of their children. It's sometimes an uphill battle to get there, but it's worth every bit of effort. Hoping this helps...thanks again for your post. S
