Wow! Great stuff. Confidence is such a huge part of how we feel about ourselves every day and whether we will stutter confidently. I spent the better part of 40 years trying to hide the fact that I stutter - not very well, but I was convinced I was hiding it. I avoided everything - learning to avoid stuttering spilled over into the rest of my life, as I avoided conflict and ever letting any emotions out. When I reached my "rock bottom moment" 6 years ago, it was the start of learning how to be comfortable in my skin and in my stuttering and to learn to act confident. Notice I say to "act confident" - many times I am not always confident, but by acting as such, I can relax and put myself out there. ~~~~~~ I totally agree with your premise that psychology needs to be a larger part of stuttering management. Avoidance behaviors are tough to combat without some understanding of why we do it and what our fears are. ~~~~~If you have time, please read my paper on here "Playing Dress Up." A grad student asked a great question about the "portrayal of confidence." I'm curious how you would respond to her, as your ideas here are about confidence. I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing your experiences. ~Pam
