Excellent quote from Dr. Sheehan. I’ll leave it to one of the greats to say something much more eloquently than I can :) I’m in agreement with him on both points. I hope the pendulum continues to swing back and ends up at a more balanced psychologically/counseling oriented approach that reinforces behavioral changes. Sheehan’s absolutely right that without thorough attitudinal change and the continuing presence of fear and avoidance, relapse is just waiting to happen. I’d even extend the attitudinal change idea a bit further and say that, if a person wants to live as a fluent speaker by suppressing their natural tendency to stutter, then a new speaker identity is probably needed as well.
