This article shed a new light on stuttering for me. At first, I didn't understand why someone would not want to change their stuttering to be a fluent speaker. However, the author made a great point in explaining how change is difficult. If stuttering is all someone ever knew, it may be difficult to enter society as a new person, a fluent speaker. This is something that needs to be addressed in therapy. Clinicians can not only treat the disfluencies. They are responsible for giving the client the tools to become a more fluent speaker and help clients along their journey to feel comfortable to interact in society with the tools they were given.
