Thanks for your insightful comments, Ken! Personally, I don’t see how a conscientious SLP could not include counseling in any therapy they’re giving, not just with those who stutter. I agree with your comments about CBT. I would even extend them to say that, in addition to accepting oneself in the new fluent role, one should also be able to accept oneself as someone who continues to stutter, if that’s what one chooses. If CBT’s been successful and you’ve truly changed your maladaptive thinking around stuttering, then either behavior (controlled fluency or managed stuttering) will be acceptable, provided it’s working for you and serving you well.
