Thanks for the historical context, Jim, I appreciate it. I’m relatively new to the field and so I never knew Mr. Goldberg personally. But I’ve heard that he was a good old soul :) You’re absolutely right about his definition of a fluent lifestyle. The material that I read containing the excerpt I use in my paper also included the definition you reference. In case anyone is reading this, here it is: “A fluent lifestyle is defined as a life style in which any and all vocal communication is thought of and/or entered into without a thought of or concern of having a stuttering disfluency. This, of course, includes not having a thought of avoiding vocal communication or a thought of using word substitution to avoid stuttering. This definition is an optimum condition. For many of us who stutter, it is not necessary to be completely fluent and to completely reach this condition to achieve a higher degree of comfort.”
