I had never thought about stuttering and therapy as comparable to alcoholism or obesity as you mentioned in your article. This was such an eye-opening moment for me to think about how so many SLPs are leaving out a portion of therapy by just giving the controls to success rather than aiding their client in the knowledge of one’s inner self and their reasoning for pursuing fluency. As a first year graduate student who still has much to learn about stuttering and treatment I was wondering if you feel whether teaching the controls should come first in your sessions or if delving into one’s reasoning for seeking fluency should begin your treatment? Or, should the two be intermixed throughout your time together in treatment? Thank you so much for taking the time to share your article and insight with me. It really helped me view stuttering and the road to fluency in a whole new light. Thanks!
