Hi Jyoti, I’m glad you’re getting so much out of this conference! I’m not sure how far along I am on Maslow’s definition of self-actualization (it’s quite broad, after all!), but if you’re referring to the self-acceptance/living authentically piece of that construct, then I’d say that my speech has not become more fluent the more I’ve managed to do those two things. You can read my first reply to Pamela above for a more detailed explanation of why that may be. Re: your comment about the lack of counseling training in this profession, I’m in total agreement. SLPs need counseling skills in nearly every interaction they’re going to have with a client or parent or family member. At present, very few grad programs require a counseling course, but there’s been a growing din of professionals calling for that to be redressed, especially from the stuttering field.
