Very well said, Gunars. I, too, believe that “the complete stuttering therapy” has yet to be devised. Mainly because the reactions to living with the disorder are so varied; therefore, what is central to one client’s recovery process may be less so or unimportant to another’s. I also agree with you re: needing to change one’s attitude about oneself, how one thinks about stuttering, and how one approaches communicating in the world. A good, holistic intervention will need to hit on all those points. I’m familiar with LeDoux’s work on fear conditioning and I, too, believe that the conditioned fear responses that many PWS acquire through years of stuttering can be very hard to extinguish, even with years of desensitization.
