Well said, Lashawn! Just to clarify: my argument is that most people who regress back to their old patterns after learning how and trying to speak fluently aren’t actively choosing to do so. They relapse primarily because they’re being human and returning to what’s familiar, to what has more meaning for them. Choice requires that individuals fully understand themselves and the motivations for their behaviors; this level of self-analysis is seldom reached during stuttering therapy, unfortunately.
