Thank you for your reply. An occasional respite sounds good to me. I had a friend who was surprised that I was open about my stutter because his fearsome father had a stutter and no one was allowed to show any form of reaction when his father stuttered. His father would fearsomely scour the room for any sign of reaction and the punishment would be severe. The subject was clearly not open for discussion. Your Mexican friend is similar in terms of not previously mentioning the subject. I am only open with my stutter when intimate with someone and sometimes more so. I am a fearful covert blocker. My daughter was the same and I detected her stutter from her earliest of sounds. I then removed the fearful things in her life and the stutter completely vanished within 6 months. I felt a duty to share my story about my daughter and my technique but I then got completely crucified by an army of mum’s with confident overt children. A few professionals chipped in and stated that she was one of those who naturally outgrow it. Then The King’s Speech came along portraying a man like myself and my daughter. I was not surprised that many did not relate to the film. Many disregarded the emotional and trauma related messages and that is understandable because most did not have such an upbringing and they are not such a person. But to me they are pieces of a jig saw puzzle that lead back to something and they should not be thrown away. It is the same as if they had made a film about your Mexican friend. I am not such a person but to me the messages in the story are pieces of the jig saw that lead back to something and they should not be thrown away. They may not be relevant to the final picture but they should not be thrown away. The King's Speech is riddled with important messages but many will be missed because most are not that type of person and/or stutterer. For example: in the film Bertie has his first appointment with Lionel. Lionel attempts to start conversation 3 times but Bertie does not respond. As a covert defence Bertie is able to rely upon the obvious respect and awkwardness with the commoner being in the presence of royalty. Lionel then starts a fourth conversation whereby Bertie has to respond. Lionel then lightens the scene with a joke and by going to make tea. Bertie then asks are you going to start treating me Dr Logue. Bertie was unaware that the treatment had started the moment he had walked through the door and that the treatment was empathy. Bertie was also unaware that Lionel would have known that Bertie would have very likely been dreading the first block and so hence why Bertie had not responded to the first three attempted conversations. Lionel then realised that empathy would not be enough and that is why he was so devastated when the appointment broke down. All important messages that many will not relate to but it is important to not throw them away
