Hello Michelle; Well, I guess my answer to your question would depend upon what you mean by "just accept their stuttering." For me, the premise of the concept of "owning stuttering" include acceptance. Students can always strive for greater fluency, even as they learn acceptance for the fact that they are, indeed, a person who stutters! The two are not mutually exclusive. As for my role, it is always one of confident, positive guide. I do my best not to "drive the truck," but to be a willing participant and mentor in their journey to self-discovery and self-acceptance. The therapeutic alliance requires it! I am a voice in the chorus that allows them to ask the important questions and seek their own answers.
