Christine: So far, I have been lucky in that most of the students I have presented this activity have responded well. That being said, I am pretty sure this has happened because I have gotten the 'timing" right. In general, I have limited advice for "how to counsel children to accept their stuttering" as I view this as an integral part of the process of stuttering therapy; not something I "do." I feel there are daily opportunities to support a child's acceptance of their speech disruptions. It is integrated in to what I say and do and the messages I send in every therapy session; expressing that they are whole and complete no matter what their speech sounds like... I know this sounds a bit over-philosophical, but I feel deeply that we don't counsel kids to DO anything or THINK anything; we plant the seeds of self-acceptance by being accepting ourselves. And, by the way; if a child has a negative reaction to the activity, I look for reasons that may have occurred, probe for any follow up I need to do to repair perceptions, and I move on! Thanks for writing and participating!
