Maile; Thanks for writing. For the most part, the evolution of thoughts and emotions is such a gradual process, it may not be visible in any one moment. So, the ways in which my students begin to take ownership in "real life" stem from the insights they have garnered by thoughtfully reflecting during this activity (among a multitude of others). My role is always to help them keep their own changes thoughts and feelings in the forefront as they approach situations that threaten to break down their new resolve. I tend to set up "homework" that addresses the ownership thoughts they have written, and then have them report back how situations changed in relation to their altered approach!
