Victoria, As I worked deep into my childhood this exploration became painful. I feel I was lucky because when I started to be overpowered by this EMDR process I also started understand some important details about my childhood. Several weeks later my stuttering vanished when I was talking to people I did not know. My speech was unchanged with friends and family. At first I found this abrupt shift in my speech very unsettling. I then quickly moved to this idea that EMDR therapy was a way to understand my stuttering. A patterned developed as I moved close to a painful event my speech would become more severe and as I moved through the memory I would then become more fluent. To answer your questions, “To whom would you recommend this type of therapy and what advice would you provide for those beginning EMDR therapy?” I would recommend this therapy to someone that could see the value of understanding how their stuttering developed even if the process was painful. My advice for those starting EMDR is to find a therapist that specializes in EMDR and is certified by the EMDR Institute, Inc. Website:www.emdr.com Also be sure your therapist is someone you feel you can trust. Also, what was it specifically about your “traditional” speech therapy that you found unsuccessful? My speech therapy was long time ago, on and off from 1956 to 1967. We worked on breathing exercises, slowing my speech rate and talking with a metronome are mainly what I remember. I found little carryover from the speech therapy sessions to the real world.
