Hi Elizabeth, You’re sharing some interesting observations from/within the US. However, I may not share your perspective, as I have seen so many creative methods being used in the US as well as remarkable professionals collaborating with each other and with the client and the client’s family. Nevertheless, some professionals in the US do default to a disorder perspective, trying to eliminate what is viewed as the problem, rather than accentuating the positive, or increasing what one is doing already that is consistent with fluency and communication freedom. You will note that recent changes in WHO have moved from a disorder perspective to a wellness perspective, shifting from a problem focus to a more well-rounded focus on the person within a social and communicative environment. In order to consider the cultural influences, one would need to look at the underlying assumptions and how they are linked to the methods being used by professionals with clients and families. Thanks for your questions. DAS
