Hi Briann, Actually, you can use a scale with very young children. The adaptation that I've seen to work well is to use a line of faces, from frowning to neutral to smiling. You could also use clouds on one end of a line and sunshine on the other, or any picture that represents positive and negative feelings, abilities, etc. to the child.
