Just one cautionary comment: It is the client's responsibility to motivate themselves, not the clinician's. In fact, no one, not even a clinician, can motivate another. What the clinician can do is recognize this to not become a "Rescuer" and engage in "The Rescue Triangle." Motivation comes from within, as you may know from your own personal experience. What the clinician can do is (1) Gauge the extent of a client's motivation to determine whether it is sufficient or nearly sufficient to suggest a better than chance probability of success as a client in therapy and (2) Help the client achieve his or her stated goals because nothing is as motivating for someone who wants to change than experiencing the change they desire. >>> Thanks, again, for your interest in the paper.
