Elizabeth, Thanks for the question. Virtually everyone who comes to therapy, especially anyone over 6 years old, has had some experience with stuttering and with various strategies they have tried to "fix" or "help" their stuttering. So if someone comes to you for the first time, you will want to learn all about what the stuttering person has done on his/her own, what the family members have advised or done, what others (e.g., teachers, coaches, friends, etc.) have advised or done, and so on. Then, when you start your therapy, you should try as much as possible to explain why you have chosen what you did and why or how you hope it will help. I don't see a "first-timer" any differently than a "veteran" speech therapy recipient in terms of getting their story and making your plans fit into that. I hope this answers your questions. Good luck in your studies. Ken
