Hi Amber, Thanks for your question. Yes, I have found that previous therapy often has not addressed the thoughts and feelings associated with stuttering as much as the actual stuttering. Yet even when that has occurred, with some probing, I have often discovered that the client has done desensitization activities such as voluntary stuttering, telephone calls, and outside speaking assignments without really knowing why he or she was asked to carry out these activities. They may have thought they were just supposed to practice their fluency, but could not maintain the fluency in those situations. Of course, they then concluded that they had failed. In cases like this, I try to explain WHY those strategies are often assigned and how they can be most useful. Often, one of the most powerful things we can do is help our clients know the specific purposes of our procedures. Best wishes, Ken
