Hi Michael. You said: "Collaboration between speech language and behavioral therapists may be able to better treat people who stutter, particularly those who experience anxiety as a result of their stuttering." I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in concluding that the treatment of stuttering is bigger than SLPs alone. While some SLPs unfortunately regard that notion as dangerous apostasy, persons who stutter (some of the time) should not. The problem is that while qualified SLPs know much about stuttering, they lack the therapeutic tools. While experts from other fields possess the therapeutic tools, they know very little about stuttering. A coordinated multidisciplinary team, about which I gave a presentation at the ISA conference in Buenos Aires last year, would bring them together for the benefit of individual stuttering clients. Using their therapeutic tools, these outside experts — in collaboration with the SLPs — would help the client overcome specific hurdles and problems in speech therapy. May it happen speedily in our day. — Ed Feuer edfeuer@mts.net
