Michael, I found your article quite informative and on topic. What we both share is our common interest in mindfullness, ACT, CBT, DBT, and MCBT. Of course, as you know I also have strong background in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. I would love to see more collaboration between SLP's and other professionals such as you and me who use the above tools. I think it would provide a superior outcome to the stuttering therapy process. Besides just addressing anxiety your mentioned tools are also quite effective in dealing with all the other negative self-defeating emotions: a) stark fear; b) guilt about not doing better; c) feelings of inadequacy; d) self-downing; e) can't-stand-itis about stuttering; f) urgency in getting things said; g) feeling overwhelmed by stuttering; h) feeling it is too hard to follow therapy regimen; i) hopelessness; j) helplessness; k) feelings of being less worthwhile (inferior); l) feeling of urgency while talking; m) fear of failure; n) feeling that speech has to be perfectly fluent (perfectionism); o) feeling that one needs to speak fluently to pursue one's goals... Michael, don't you think that ACT, etc. can be effectively applied to manage or resolve these self-defeating feelings? And don't you think that the therapy would be enhanced if a professional who knows and specifically practices these techniques/theories daily would contribute a lot?
