Great question. I use the brain imaging research that documents a slight lag in the in the onset of the motor movements for initiation of speech in PWS. This leads to disynchronous timing in longer utterances. The pauses that occur with phrasing, give the speaker a chance to “re-synch” the timing. The teens usually see the benefit right away in a Level 1 article. So many teens are so relieved when they can start a sentence fluently that they rush to get as much information out as quickly as possible while they are fluent. Unfortunately, this is actually counterproductive. Once they gain some confidence that phrasing actually helps, I find they are less likely to try to say too much in one speech segment.
