That's a really good question Kayla, one that leads to a lot of interesting areas. I'll choose my words carefully now that I know your prof is Dr. Klein. I don't remember ever thinking that my non-stuttering SLP didn't get it and I've certainly since learned that there are many good SLPs successfully treating stuttering who don't stutter themselves. When you think about it, because there is so much counseling involved, one need not have the same experiences as long as one can draw the client out (e.g., "You're right, I don't know how you feel. Please describe it."). Even when both people stutter, there are so many variables that can differ (severity levels, experiences, communication demands, etc.), they're not really going through exactly the same thing. So treatment shouldn't change that much depending on whether the SLP stutters.
