Thank you for your note & questions, Kayleigh. The thing that came to mind when I thought about leaning on humor was making fun of listeners during middle school therapy. That is, I and the guy I was grouped with laughed about advice such as "Slow down & take it easy" (like we'd never thought of that before). Come to think of it, I've been in similar discussions during support group meetings. I know a school SLP who took his kids around the building talking to people, then making fun of their reactions. It sounds kind of mean on the surface, but for the kids it felt like turning the tables on listeners. RE acceptance, I think with age came more arrogance & less patience with the life of avoidance. When I first became an SLP, it was with the idea of being there for middle schoolers who stutter & have trouble navigating the whole peer pressure/wanting to fit in/stuttering world they live in. How about you--what's your inspiration? It's always interesting to hear why people enter the field.
