The topic of treating stuttering and how it is a burden for many clinicians took me by surprise. I was unaware that clinicians were so fearful to take upon stuttering cases. However, I have recently heard this being the case for many, whether out in the field as a new SLP or for someone that has been working for many years. One of the key points we touched upon in one of my recent classes was to develop a rapport with the client. Establishing a relationship will truly take therapy in the right direction. As the article stated, stuttering is more than just a fluency issue, there are emotions and tension behind the speech problem which need to be addressed. Therefore, to be able to delve into the inner problems with your client, the number one thing to keep in mind is to reach a level of comfortability.
