I am currently a second year graduate student at Southern University at Baton Rouge. I now have the privilege of working with a middle school student who stutters. Before starting one-on-one therapy with the student, I decided to sit in the classroom with her to observe how she interacted with her peers and the teachers in the classroom. One thing I noticed while observing her is that neither the teacher nor her classmates were quite sure how to talk to her or interact with her. Her classmates don’t tease her but I did find that they tend to complete her sentences for her, which gets her frustrated. Her teacher, often times, will do the same thing which makes her feel rushed and causes her to stutter more. I believe that educating her teachers and classmates on how to interact with her in the classroom can be a beginning stage to therapy and help her to feel more comfortable and confident when speaking to them.
