I loved this article! I recently attended an NSA Meeting in which many parents discussed how disappointed they were with school-based fluency therapy. As a graduate student aspiring to be an SLS in the schools, I was shocked to hear such reactions. Many parents discussed how the therapists complained about their case-loads, and often admitted that they were not comfortable in treating fluency disorders. This article helped me realize that it is crucial for an SLS to come out of his/her office and encourage students to practice their strategies. This may include formulating peer groups and having the student practice fluent speech with a buddy, or ordering lunch in the cafeteria. The SLS not only provides therapy, but also counsels and advocates for students. If an SLS is not comfortable, he/she should consider taking CEUs related to fluency disorders and/or consult with experts in the field.
