I am currently taking a graduate level course in Stuttering. I find this population to be very interesting and challenging. It seems there is a wide variety of awareness and attitudes of children who stutter. Perhaps that is what makes the population so "frightening" for SLPs. For instance, I have talked to classmates whose fluency clients are not aware of their stutter, have a high emotional component to their stutter, and others who have no interest in attending therapy. I think the latter client would be more of a challenge for me personally, as we cannot instill motivation into the client. My question to you, is how can you reach those students who simply do not wish to attend therapy or address their stutter? Or do we have to dismiss and wait for them to seek help?
