Hello. I have a question about a student that I was providing services to a few years back. I was working as an SLPA in the elementary schools and I had a child on my caseload who stuttered severely. He was bullied by other kids and the teachers even treated him harshly. In therapy, we practiced the relaxation techniques and breathing, but I think he was so traumatized by everything going on around him that he actually got worse. I was an advocate for this child that year and his teachers did not like how I was trying to help him. What are your thoughts on training SLPs how to handle these types of situations of helping these kids (being advocates for them), when nobody else understands what they are dealing with? Shouldn't there be more training on how to handle the "emotional" aspect of these children who stutter? Some days I felt helpless when he was in therapy with me. I really have a heart for these children now since I went through this experience.
