Hi Julie - Thanks for your post. Yes, it's tremendously important that we help parents gain the sense of hope that we are working to instill in their children. This is not always easy to do. Educating parents about the true nature of stuttering helps, but ultimately, parents need to have access to the opportunity to grow and change in their own feelings about stuttering. Sometimes, the SLP can provide this opportunity (in private and clinical settings). Other times, we may not have access to the parents (e.g., in the school setting) so it can be harder to achieve. That's one of the reasons that we recommend that all of the families that we work with connect with the Stuttering Self-Help organizations in some fashion. The National Stuttering Association (NSA) and Friends: The National Association for Young People Who Stutter can make a world of difference in the lives of parents, not just the kids themselves. We encourage you as a clinician to learn about these organizations and form your own alliance with them, so you can help the parents get connected. This is one of the best ways that they can make real, substantive change sin their understanding of stuttering. Thanks again for your post! S
