Cluttering: a diagnostic case report conducted by Wolk (1986), includes some information that I found to be very important. Although only one subject was used in the study it is interesting to note that the study revealed a right ear advantage. Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) has been found with stutterers; however, stutterers are “less likely to show right ear effect in dichotic listening tasks when semantically meaningful material is used (St. Louis, 2010).” Future research for Wolk’s study should include a larger number of cluttering participants who need CAPD testing. If future research indicates that clutterers do have a right ear advantage as opposed to stutterers who do not, perhaps this right/left ear advantage can be used in the future when classifying a person as a clutterer vs. a stutterer.
