Hi, Megan - These are interesting questions. Auditory processing difficulties can occur independently of hearing loss - in fact, they often do. I am not aware of clutterers having hearing loss more often than the rest of the population, so it would seem unlikely that cluttering would be caused by hearing loss; however, I would think that it is possible for both to be present in the same person. We need to be careful not to jump to conclusions based on the three studies discussed in my paper. We cannot base a diagnosis of CAPD on one or two auditory tasks. We really need to give a larger, more comprehensive battery to a larger group of clutterers, preferably pure clutterers, before we can make any definitive connection. These studies alert us to the possibility of an auditory processing component. Some of the subjects had concommitant disorders which could have influenced the results. We have a long way to go before we know for sure. I hope this answers your questons, Megan. All the best with your studies.
