In rereading this I thought I might add that pauses were not necessarily hesitations, nor were hesitations necessarily pauses. Again, this was a pretty subjective assessment I did. I guess there are intentional pauses, i.e. those you mention of gifted orators, which I definitely did not count as hesitations. A pause for an "effect" during a speech is not a hesitation. A hesitation, to me, subjectively, is more unplanned, and reflects some "change" in thought organization/planning on the part of the speaker. For example it may reflect a change in phonemes, or it could reflect a change in word choice. I think there should be a very precise way to differentiate "pause" from "hesitation" because again, to me, they are pretty different. A pause could contain a hesitation, certainly, but not all pauses do. It is such an interesting topic! Thank you Dr. Myers for the input. You really got my mind going re: future dissertation topics (as I plan to return to school in 2011). :) :)
