This is a good question. Several ways to try to answer it. Firstly, "how fast is too fast" probably is best determined in relation to the individual's so-called capacity for speech rate. That is, if the clinician observes "breakdowns" (misarticulations, lots of disfluencies, lack of clarity of the language used to encode the message), then these are signs that the person is going too fast. Second, the use of the 55-65 range as 'average' speed was chosen because in fact these are the speed limits for many parts of the country. Therefore, it gets at the idea that the PWC needs to monitor and modulate his speed so that he is not going too fast. Florence
