You could maybe try having him say it "his way" first, then try it with the dots. It might help him to feel the difference as well. Have you tried explaining the purpose of the dots? Even though he is young it might help him to understand why he needs them. Also, I always use the dots when I speak as well, that way it doesn't feel so one-sided.
