Hi Lisa, No specifics abut Russian phonetics interfering with stuttering modification techniques are described in the literature or discussed in my communications with my colleagues from Russia. I never observed such difficulties in my work with Russian clients as well. In case you are interested in a study conducted seven years ago, I will include the responses I received from 20 professionals who specialize in stuttering in Russia and in the Ukraine (Shapiro, et al). They describe the following methods facilitating fluent speech: lower-diaphragmatic breathing: 35%; easy vocal onset: 30%; improving speech rate and rhythm: 25%; logorhythmic training: 20%; reducing speech rate: 15%; synchronous speech with movements of the leading hand: 10%; parsing sentences: 5%. Other methods include use of a noise makers, choral reading and imitative speech following clinician’s model, massage of articulatory muscles, gradual increase in linguistic complexity, transfer of fluent speech to various life situations. (Some participants gave more than one response). Please let me know if you want me to tell you anything else about treatment of stuttering in Russia. Isabella
