When a person clutters he or she can develop communication fear and therefore develop stuttering behavior. When nothing is done to change this development the fear becomes worse and the tension becomes so high that only the stuttering is heard. As I tell my clients: "you fall after you stumbled, when you do not stumble anymore the chance of falling is limited". When a person with (severe) stuttering and cluttering is treated for his cluttering, it is possible that the stuttering component diminishes and the cluttering is audible again. So in order to understand differences in fluency disorders it is always important to look at more than only frequency of disfluencies. SLTs should look at MLU, communicative intention, body tension, eye contact, etc..etc.. besides disfluency types, errors in pausing and hesitations. When cluttering appears after succesfull stuttering treatment it is necessary to treat the cluttering component as well in order to prevent fall back. Gr. Yvonne
