Channa, I think that most of the clients I've been privileged to work with who clutter are definitely aware that they are not getting their message across. There has been a wide range of difference in terms of the level of understanding regarding the exact issues with their speech pattern. I don't think that Claudia really recognized that her speech was not understandable. She did, however, realize that people weren't responding well to her attempts to communicate with them. I think it is important when we assess someone coming to us who presents with cluttered speech to ask them questions to identify the level of understanding they have of the problem. Are they able to describe all or some of the features of their speech that interfere with communication, or do they have a more general feeling that something is not working well? Knowing that will probably help the SLP in developing an appropriate intervention plan. Thanks for your question. Regards, Lynne
