Judy you are raising an interesting point here. A few quick thoughts. I used to think of Italian as a very rapid language until I learned how to speak it and this impression disappeared. In the clinical domain something similar may be going on regarding cluttering. It seems to be associated with rapid bursts of speech but these bursts may not always be fast in a physical sense. When cluttering becomes less clear and intelligible this could contribute to the perception of it being fast even though this may not be true in a physical sense. Does that make sense? The physical rate of course can be determined (that is if we can figure out all the syllables that are spoken), but the perceptual rate will need to be determined through perceptual rating procedures.
