It is my hope that awareness of communication disorders would aid improvement in treatments. However, awareness of communication disorders does not always relate to treatment of the disorder. Many factors would influence improvement of treatment options. For example, cultural attitudes, level of acceptance of the disorder, severity level, availability of and resources for treatment all play a part in treating any communication disorder. According to Furquim (1998), there is an awareness of stuttering in Brazil, but a stigma is attached to those who stutter and the government does not provide resources to aid those who stutter.
