In response to the first discussion point, I think it is crucial to realize that without defining cluttering and all associated ‘fluency’ disorders, one cannot expect society to recognize them as disorders. It is the responsibility of professionals such as speech pathologists to create clear cut definitions and raise awareness in order to help individuals with speech problems. Once a term for the disorder is created, society itself can put a name to the problems they observe and, in turn, awareness will be raised. In the absence of recognition, the disorder will continue to have the negative connotations that society applies to atypical speech.
