Thank you for being such a contributing member of ICA, Jonathan! We need input from family members, especially parents like you who have been through the frustrations and breakthroughs of getting effective therapy for your son! You shared many poignant and insightful remarks. One in particular I think needs to be highlighted is your urging that SLPs take stock of how the different symptoms (the so-called "issues" you indicated) must be considered "as a whole." This has implications for the need to put the symptoms in a hiearchy, so that we first address what might be considered to be the most "influential" driving force behind the person's cluttering behaviors. For many, this might be finding ways to heighten awareness of rate, in order to modulate it as necessary. Many of the hallmark symptoms of cluttering (e.g., telescoping of words, neutralization of vowels, perhaps even some of the interjections and revisions) may dissipate once we address these "common denominator" factors. I have spoken/written about cluttering from a "systems approach" for nearly 20 years, that one underlying factor can have an influence on another factor of the system (in the Myers and St. Louis book on the ICA website). Again, thank you for being such a contributing member of ICA!!! Hope to meet you at ASHA or....at the Second (live) World Conference on Cluttering.
