A few months ago, before I enrolled in a fluency class, I had no idea that cluttering existed. I some what understand your frustration in dealing with the insurance companies because of this “unknown” disability. My mother has a similar problem because she has not been able to get a distinguishable diagnosis for a physical handicap and having a diagnosis, that is similar to what you described as “ We don’t know what’s wrong with you” doesn’t go over well when trying to have the insurance company cover medical expenses. You made a statement in your article that there is a “lack of SLP’s who specialize in cluttering. Those who do are smart enough no to deal with the insurances.” My question is, why are the SLP’s who do not deal with the insurance companies smarter? I feel that the more SLP’s who are familiar with cluttering should provide services and make the insurance companies, as well as appropriate government agencies, aware that this is a problem in our community that needs to be addressed. Thank you for making the difficulties associated with this disorder more widely know. As a student in the department of Communication Disorders and Sciences, I feel it is beneficial to hear the struggles that parents go through fighting for services for their child. I feel that service providers often forget just how hard parents fight for their children.
