One of the best ways of improving self monitoring is visual and auditory feedback. I use PRAAT software (www.praat.org) to visualise and analyse speech. It is very important to give quick feedback. So it is better to record a sentence and listen to it (maybe a couple of times) right away. In listening you have to give a listening task: for instance listen if your pause between sentences is long enough. Listening to a recording of a minute and ask: "And what do you think of it?" is not helpfull.
