Therapy should not be directed to reducing speech rate, but to become aware of the speech rate and the effects of it and learn how to compensate for this. One example: When a person is aware that he is not pausing accurately (mostly too short) we can learn by audiovisual feedback to prolong the pauses (to 0.5 - 1.0 seconds) and analyse the effects on speech rate, fluency or intelligibility.
