Jennifer, You make a great point about professors not recommending a Ph.D. I recall that when I mentioned I wanted a Ph.D., it was recommended that I work in the field to get clinical experience first. This made perfect sense to me at the time, but now I see this as problematic. At that time I was in a life situation in which a Ph.D. would have been much easier. When I finally began my Ph.D., my wife and I were beginning to have children. Since I am married to a buys physician, I found myself in the same position many women in our field find themselves, I was working and taking care of children (after the nanny went home). For those who know me, they know I've been at this Ph.D. for a while :) I wonder how many people never go back who would have gone straight to the Ph.D. My friends in the basic sciences never even thought of working for five years before getting their doctorates. Great Point.

Kevin
