Judy, I would like to first say hello and that I really enjoyed your article. As a teacher and Grad student, I am learning so much about Stuttering. I currently have a 13 year old girl on my caseload who stutters severely. I never met her previous speech therapist from her old school, but have heard that she practices "tough love" techniques in her therapy. Although I have a different philosophy...I am having difficulty getting her to open up to me and to give me a chance. She is a very sweet girl, but when I try to work on her fluency, she shuts down completely. Do you have any suggestions for me on how to work with a child that has had bad previous experiences with SLP's and tough love?
