Judy- Thanks for your article-It made me think! I was surprised to see "approaching strangers" and "speaking in public" included under harsh therapy activities. I find these activities to be perfectly appropriate for the client that is ready to take that step. Would you say that these activities can be appropriate in many situations? The client should also be made aware that he has the right to say no.

I can recall in my lifetime being challenged by teachers and parents to do things that weren't comfortable or easy and find myself a better person because of it. I think the key word in "tough love" is "love". The problem you are suggesting lies not in the practice of tough love, but possibly within the clinician.
