My name is Becky and I'm a graduate student in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Let me begin by saying that I really enjoyed your paper. As I am preparing to take the national exam, I am refamiliariing myself with ASHA's Code of Ethics. I strongly believe it is the clinician's responsibility to know and understand these guidelines as well as to use them professionally. In addition, I like how room for interpretation. It allows clinicians to be creative with therapy. In a fluency class I am taking now, we have been looking at Van Riper's desensitization techniques. Although they were shocking at times, I don't feel that they were unethical practices. His technique worked for many people. Do you think making the ASHA guidelines more strict would take away from the diversity of therapy?
